On our way to Alaska
We left Titusville FL on May 3. Did I say that we are now Great-Grandparents! Our oldest Granddaughter, Amanda, gave birth to Cambria Rae. It is hard to believe that our son is a grandfather. Pictures are on my photo website.
Our first night was in Tallahassee FL and then headed to the Alabama Gulf coast. We stayed at an inland RV park because the weather was predicted to be very bad for the next few days, but that was a mistake because although the weather was bad on our way in, it turned out to be very nice for the next few days. We discovered Gulf Islands National Seashore along the coast of FL and AL with very nice camping areas. It is on our list of “next time”. Our next destination is Betty’s RV Park in Abbeville LA. We have stayed with Betty a few times which is always a good time. She called us on our way in and wanted to know if we wanted to join them for a Crawfish Boil! It took us about 2 seconds to reply: “YES!” When we arrived the Crawfish were almost ready, perfect timing. The best thing about Betty’s is that there is always something to do and eating is the favorite pastime. We loved Betty’s homemade Chicken & Sausage Gumbo and Ron could not wait to have an Oyster PoBoy at Bon Creole in New Iberia. A week and 5 pounds later we left Betty’s and headed to Beaumont TX where we visited the Botanical Gardens.
Now we head north. We visit Nebraska and North Dakota, two states where we have never been. We tried to fit in Iowa but it did not work out. As of this time, we have only 3 states where we have not visited, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin!
Once we leave Beaumont, we stop in Tyler TX, Guthrie OK and up to Junction City KS. By this time it is Memorial Day and we were lucky to get a nice lakefront site on Milford Lake for the weekend. From KS the scenery is pretty much the same through Nebraska, SD and ND. The corn fields are planted, the cattle is grazing and the land is very flat. You can see for miles and miles and the roads are absolutely straight. We stayed on US 81 all the way to North Dakota. We learned that US 81 is part of the Pan American highway that starts in Manitoba Canada in the north and goes south through the US to Mexico City, Central America, and continues all the way down to the southern tip of South America. What a trip that would be.
Ron has always wanted to go to Fargo ND and we get there the last weekend in May. It is a much larger city than we expected, in fact it is the largest city in ND. We went to the historic area of the city where there are lots of art galleries, museums and restaurants. From Fargo, we head to Bismarck and west to Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the ND Badlands. This is our last stop before we head into Saskatchewan Canada.
