Ginny & Ron at Glen Falls NC

  August & September 2008

Riverbend RV Park Lake Toxaway NC

We enjoyed camp-hosting at Riverbend RV Park for August & September.  Our duties were to keep the park looking nice, greet new campers, get them situated on their site, keeping the restrooms clean and enjoying the people.  Part of the job included Ron playing golf every Thursday with the other campers and help with the great meals that Gary & Carol prepare.

Ron celebrated his 62nd birthday and was proud to get his “Old Man’s Pass” for the National Parks!

Hurricane Fay dumped about 10 inches of rain in our area and the creek at the campground overflowed.  The campground was flooded for a while until the dam broke and the water subsided.  Pretty exciting times.

One weekend in August, Brian, Lyn, Jim, Bev and our grandsons from Greenville came up for a weekend of camping.  We enjoyed having them visit and played a few rounds of UNO.  Jim & Bev had an exchange student from France staying with them and he enjoyed the camping experience.

In September we went to Yadking Valley NC, where there are wineries.  We toured Shelton Vineyards and stayed at a B&B with Jim & Bev.  The nearby town of Mount Airy is the birthplace of Andy Griffith and is nicknamed Mayberry because there is where the Andy Griffith show was fashioned after.  Floyd’s barber shop is still there and Floyd, who is 85 yrs old, gave Jimmy a great haircut.  Otis, the town drunk, was walking around talking to everyone.  It was an interesting little town.

We took a couple of hikes, one to John Rock at Pisgah Forest and one to Glen Falls near Highlands.  Both were good hikes and we wished we could have done more but we ran out of time!

We went down to Greenville for a couple of weekends so Ron could help with getting Brian’s ceiling in his house torn out and framed so he could have new lighting and sheetrock installed.  A job well done!

By the end of September the weather started to get very cool in the mountains, the trees started to change so we know it is time to head south.  But before we left, we went to Asheville and stayed at a B&B for the first few days of October.  We visited the Western NC Arboretum where they have a good display of around 100 Bonsai trees.  And we walked the Urban Trail around Asheville.  It was a nice weekend.  And now we are ready to head south, back to Florida where we will spend the winter.
