Happy hour at Mile 384 at 115 Creek
Traveling the Alaska highway is always an adventure because you never know what is next down the road. You may be lucky and see bears, moose and buffalo along the road side. And, for some not so lucky. In our case, we have seen 2 small bears, a dead moose, 2 live moose and a few buffalo. The scenery is always beautiful and changing. The last time we traveled the Alaskan Highway, the mountains were completely snow covered and this time not so much, but still magnificent. We enjoy finding boondocking areas along the highway to spend the night. Some are better and more scenic than the others, but all are quiet during the night. We have noticed that traffic is much lighter than it was on our last trip. And the road is in much better condition.
We started out leaving Dawson Creek with a nail in our tire which was easily fixed at Wal-mart. So far, no other casualties except for the price of fuel. We have paid as high as $1.699 per liter! Ouch!
We enjoyed soaking in Liard Hot Springs and saw where the fires took place around Smith River Falls. We stopped at Watson Lake sign forest and found our old sign from 2003. Ron renewed the sign. When we get on the road we see that Mukluk Annie's, is closed! Everyone liked stopping at Mukluk's for free camping with the purchase of a Salmon or Rib dinner and a boat ride on the lake. Whitehorse YT, is another one of our favorite places. We met with friends Jaimie and George and took a hike with them to see Miles Canyon. We spent a few days getting ready to go another 396 miles to get to Alaska. And the roads were good, until after Haines Junction. Then, it got rough and could only drive at 10-15 mph for 5 miles around Kluane Lake. We accumulated lots of dust, but then, on a 15 mile stretch, they started to put water down to control the dust. This is when it sticks to everything!
We get to Tok Alaska on June 24. Now we need to decide which route we will take for the rest of the trip.
